Kumihimo 2.0 isn’t an official, universally-defined term in the braiding world—yet.
Tradition + Innovation = Kumihimo 2.0

“Kumihimo 2.0” refers to the modern evolution of traditional Japanese Kumihimo- honoring its centuries-old roots while intentionally expanding how, where and why it’s practiced today. This next generation interlacements uses modern methods, materials, tools, and digital-era innovations expand beyond traditional Japanese braiding. Kumihimo 2.0 refers to the evolution of Kumihimo from purely traditional cord-making into a broader, technology-infused, design-driven, global multi-disciplinary art form. This includes new tools, materials, teaching methods, digital resources, and advanced artistic applications. Also included in this are modifications in the foundations of Kumihimo tradition is respected including classical foundations using the marudai, takadai, kakudai and ayatakedai and historic braid structures, so the lineage remains intact and revered. However, contemporary materials are used to elevate the traditional art form, such as glass & lamp work beads, ceramic, metal and speciality beads; non-silk fibers (nylon, cotton. linen, wire, recycled and art yarns. Where tradition began with kumihimo cords used exclusively to secure swords for Samurai warriors and obijime cords on kimono’s, the new application includes use of kumihimo as jewelry and sculptural adornment, wearable art, fiber sculpture, straps, belts and decorative knots. Technology advancements have also elevated how designs are conceptualized and reproduced (yet still hand made). These advancements include how students and teachers interact, sharing PDFs, diagrams, videos and online communities for networking and education (instead of retaining the wisdom within a family or community to showcase pride and representation).
